Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area
This nighttime image, photographed in Feb. 2, 2012 by one of the members of the Expedition 30 crew from the International Space Station, features the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area strung along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan.
The region is partially covered by clouds, probably low-hanging, or even fog. Meteorologists say there is a fine line between low thin clouds and fog. Fog is not common in the Great Lakes area this time of the year (usually too windy), but this has been an exceptionally mild winter.
The faint gold line of airglow—caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting the gas molecules in the upper atmosphere—parallels the horizon or Earth limb. Minor auroral activity (Borealis) is visible in upper right.
US East Coast and Aurora
This Jan. 29 panorama of much of the East Coast, photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station, provides a look generally northeastward: Philadelphia-New York City-Boston corridor (bottom-center); western Lake Ontario shoreline with Toronto (left edge); Montreal (near center). An optical illusion in the photo makes the atmospheric limb and light activity from Aurora Borealis appear “intertwined.”
Coronal aurora over Fairbanks, Alaska
Time-lapse movie of the coronal aurora appeared over Fairbanks, Alaska. Red aurora was also captured. (1:44 - 2:11am AKST, January 22, 2012)
Real time footage of aurora in Tromso, Norway
Photographer Alistair Chapman filmed this incredible footage of the Aurora Borealis in real-time during the peak of the Solar Storm on January 24th. This is not time-lapse, this is how the Northern Lights really can dance and move across the sky. The colours are true as well. He even captured a shooting star at 02:30.
Amateur photographer Tommy Eliasson caught this stunning time-lapse image of a meteorite streaking through the Milky Way (above centre) alongside the vibrant colours of the aurora
