I’d rather see them put some radio telescopes on the dark side of the moon first, but this is a cool concept (shame we’ll probably never see funding for this though).NASA eyes plan for deep-space outpost near the Moon
NASA is pressing forward on assessing the value of a “human-tended waypoint” near the far side of the moon — one that would embrace international partnerships as well as commercial and academic participation.
According to a Feb. 3 memo from William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for human exploration and operations, a team is being formed to develop a cohesive plan for exploring a spot in space known as the Earth-moon libration point 2 (EML-2).
Libration points, also known as Lagrangian points, are places in space where the combined gravitational pull of two large masses roughly balance each other out, allowing spacecraft to essentially “park” there. A pre-memo NASA appraisal of EML-2, which is near the lunar far side, has spotlighted this destination as the “leading option” for a near-term exploration capability.
EML-2 could serve as a gateway for capability-driven exploration of multiple destinations, such as near-lunar space, asteroids, the moon, the moons of Mars and, ultimately, Mars itself, according to NASA officials. A capabilities-driven NASA architecture is one that should use the agency’s planned heavy-lift rocket, known as the Space Launch System, and the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle “as the foundational elements.”

For all the doubter’s out there that still believe we didn’t land on the moon (personally I think they’re just pissed that it’s not made out of cheese or something)!

The full Moon and the U.S. Capitol are seen early in the evening on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 from Arlington National Cemetery.
Sidenote: I’d be interested in seeing this in my lifetime, but I don’t think Newt Gingrich and his current presidential plans and/or plans for bringing N.A.S.A. back to the moon have a prayer of succeeding.Contour Crafting Robots on the Moon
USC Professors Behrokh Khoshnevis (Engineering), Anders Carlson (Architecture), Neil Leach (Architecture) and Madhu Thangavelu (Astronautics) have completed their first visualization for their NASA research grant into the potential use of Contour Crafting robotic fabrication technology to build structures on the Moon.
The image here shows a storage space being constructed by a Contour Crafting robot housed on a version of the ATHLETE rover developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The robot prints the structure layer by layer using lunar concrete composed of regolith from the surface of the Moon.
Contour Crafting was invented originally for use on earth by Behrokh Khoshnevis at USC, whose alumni include Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon. It was recently voted one of the top 15 innovations most likely to change the World. The question now being addressed is how it will change the Moon.

Space Station Crossing Face of Moon
This composite of images of the International Space Station flying over the Houston area show the progress of the station as it crossed the face of the moon in the early evening of Jan. 4, 2012 over NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.
December 2011 Total Lunar Eclipse
The Earth passed between the moon and the sun this morning, treating early risers to a cosmic, rusty-red lunar light spectacular. This was the last chance to see the natural wonder of a total lunar eclipse in 2011.
It was a rare chance to see an ‘impossible’ eclipse, with the moon red and the rising sun in the sky simultaneously. Those in western North America had the best views well before dawn at 4.45am PST, and viewers could still catch the eclipse until as late as 6.05am PST. Unfortunately, sunrise and moonset stopped those in the eastern U.S. from watching the eclipse.
Total Eclipse of the Moon
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes completely beneath Earth’s shadow. On Dec. 10, 2011, the second of this year’s two total lunar eclipses will occur, and will be visible in Asia, Australia, and will rise and set over Europe and North America, respectively. The first total lunar eclipse of the year occured June 15.
Don’t you just HATE it when that happens! Anyone know any good tips for taking pictures of the moon?Moon
